Belle Island Village: Debbie Reynolds’ Hollywood Memorabilia Puts On a Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Show
Glamour and grit shook hands at the bankruptcy auction for an auction of Debbie Reynolds’ faltering tourist destination, Belle Island Village of Pigeon Forge, TN. Reynolds’ son and brother of actress/author Carrie Fisher Todd Fisher quietly attempted to keep the auction in the family as he tries to pitch a deal to creditors. Viewers looking for a show of spectacle were met instead with 30 minutes of legal proceedings, albeit next to the unusual display of a Dolly Parton statue next to the podium. Belle Island Village, in the unusual nook of Pigeon Forge TN, was to be a dream tourist destination that its part owner Debbie Reynolds envisioned...that is, before the economy collapsed.
The would-be hot spot has an unfinished 1930s-style hotel, a theme park which contains a NASCAR-themed race track, and Hollywood museum with authentic relics from movies like The Wizard of Oz and Singin’ In the Rain—Ms. Reynold’s personal collection of memorabilia. Belle Island Village sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June of this year, but one of its major lenders, Regions Bank, disputed that their money in the project makes them a shoo-in. Todd Fisher claims that the bankruptcy wasn’t for a lack of leadership in the tourist attraction, just a result of their cooperating developer Biv Retail LLC filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy in the faltering real estate market.
Prospects aren’t exactly grim for the stalled vacation spot, but son Hollywood royalty Todd Fisher wants to make sure the future owner is able to funnel new money in the incomplete park, which would need another $30 million. Regions Bank was the only bidder at the otherwise silent bankruptcy auction with a $23.9 million bid. The real question is, can the current owners, Reynolds and Fisher have their Hollywood memorabilia dreams realized in another owner’s name? Will they get to pop a champagne cork at the future, and yet-unrealized, Belle Island Village or will the investment flop belly up? Only time will tell.
In cases like these, bankruptcy isn’t the definitive bitter, defeating end. Instead, it’s merely a step towards finishing a stalled project.
